Jerusalem, with its turbulent history, is without doubt one of the best-known cities of the world. A long line of foreign powers have ruled over it, from as far back as biblical times. But the city owes its importance not to them but to the fact that it is the birthplace of the monotheistic currents that shape Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Othmar Keel sketches in broad brush strokes the historical development of Israelite-Jewish monotheism in and around Jerusalem, arguing that monotheism is “a product of the city, not of the desert,” and describes its integration of polytheistic symbols and perceptions into its worldview. Keel relies on biblical and extrabiblical texts as well as the rich iconographic evidence of archaeological discoveries. Abundant maps and sketches of archaeological artifacts enhance his argument.

This volume provides two of Martin Luther’s most significant writings on prayer. In Little Prayer Book (1522), Luther seeks to reform the theology and practice of prayer in clear and understandable language for all people by encouraging simple, direct prayer to God, who promises to hear the one who prays. Luther focuses on the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, and Lord’s Prayer, giving his treatment of prayer a catechetical feel that would later provide the structure of his catechisms. In A Simple Way to Pray (1535), Luther offers his barber[AA1] and all other readers insights into his own prayer life. He organizes his comments around the seven petitions of the prayer Jesus taught to his disciples. He also uses the Ten Commandments and the Apostles’ Creed as resources for prayer. He sets out to “kindle a fire in the heart” and increase the reader’s eagerness for prayer. This volume is excerpted from The Annotated Luther series, volume 4 (Pastoral Writings). Each volume and selection in the series contains new introductions, extensive annotations, illustrations, and notes to help shed light on Luther’s context and to interpret his writings for today.

English summary: This volume contains essays by Isac Leo Seeligmann, a biblical scholar from Jerusalem and one of the outstanding exegetes of the last century. The studies represent the broad spectrum of his research, which ranged from biblical historiography and biblical law, from studies of prophecy and psalms to the history of the biblical text and innerbiblical interpretation. In a unique manner, Seeligmann's studies demonstrate an extensive knowledge of traditional Jewish literature as well as classical and ancient literature. In addition to eight studies already published in German or English, this work also contains ten Hebrew essays, translated into German for the first time and thus made available to a wider audience interested in biblical scholarship and theology. Ever since Jesus walked the hills of Galilee and Paul travelled the roads of Asia Minor and Greece, Christianity has shown a remarkable ability to adapt itself to various social and cultural environments. Recent research has demonstrated that these environments can only be very insufficiently termed as "rural" or "urban". Neither was Jesus' Galilee only rural, nor Paul's Asia only "urban". On the background of ongoing research on the diversity of social environments in the Early Empire, this volume will focus on various early Christian "worlds" as witnessed in canonical and non-canonical texts. How did Early Christians experience and react to "rural" and "urban" life? What were the mechanisms behind this adaptability? Papers will analyze the relation between urban Christian beginnings and the role of the rural Jesus-tradition. In what sense did the image of Jesus, the "Galilean village Jew", change when his message was carried into the cities of the Mediterranean world from Jerusalem to Athens or Rome? Papers will not only deal with various personalities or literary works whose various attitudes towards urban life became formative for future Christianity. They will also explore the different local milieus that demonstrate the wide range of Christian cultural perspectives.

Special attention is given to the coherent growth of Christian faith in connection with worship, alongside the crucial transformation of Christian life and doctrine under the Christian Emperors. As well as offering a chronological development of the Early Church, the book examines the interaction between Christian worship and faith. In addition, readers interested in systematic theology can refer to chapters on the roots of some significant theological notions in Christian Antiquity, also with reference to ancient philosophy. Issues addressed include: · Distinctiveness of the Christian identity during the first centuries · Diversity of communities and their theologies · Connection between faith and worship · Transition from the persecuted minority to triumphant Church with Creeds · History of early Christian thought and modern systematic theology

[Cultural Impacts of the Reformation. Documentation of the Wittenberg Conference in August 2017. Volume II] The Reformation not only changed theology and the church, but set in motion a fundamental transformation, which encompassed every aspect of society. Thus, Protestantism had an enduring influence on social structures, patterns of perception, normative ideas, scientific concepts, scopes for artistic expression and cultural identities. The announced proceedings document the international and interdisciplinary congress "Cultural Impacts of the Reformation" held in August 2017 by the universities of Halle-Wittenberg, Jena and Leipzig at the LEUCOREA Foundation in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The contributions – amongst others by Udo Sträter, Charlotte Methuen, Martin Heckel, Herman Selderhuis, Rudolf von Sinner, Daniel Jeyaraj and Jochen Hörisch – show precisely both the ways the Protestant confessional milieus have been influential for 500 years and how they themselves have reacted to cultural challenges.
