How is academia portrayed in children's literature? This Element ambitiously surveys fictional professors in texts marketed towards children, who are overwhelmingly white and male, tending to be elderly scientists. Professors fall into three stereotypes: the vehicle to explain scientific facts, the baffled genius, and the evil madman. By the late twentieth century, the stereotype of the male, mad, muddlehead, called Professor SomethingDumb, is formed in humorous yet pejorative fashion. This Element provides a publishing history of the role of academics in children's literature, questioning the book culture which promotes the enforcement of stereotypes regarding intellectual expertise in children's media. This title is also available, with additional material, as Open Access.
Set against the rolling backdrop of a century of British history from WWI to the 'War on Terror', this is an intimate family portrait captured in snapshots. First there is William, the factory lad who loses his life in Gallipoli, then his son Billy, a champion cyclist who survives the D-Day Landings on a military bicycle, followed by his crippled son Will who becomes an Oxford academic in the 1960s, and finally his daughter Billie, an artist in contemporary London. Just as the names - William, Billy, Will, Billie - echo down through the family, so too the legacy of choices made, chances lost, and secrets kept. Rich in drama and sensuous in detail, The Picture Book is a beautifully crafted story about parents and children, about fate and repetition, and about the possibility of breaking free.

I was inspired to create this alphabetic phonics activity book for preschoolers from my experiences as a preschool teacher. My love for the students and the birth of my own son, Robert, has inspired me to promote these same exercises to stimulate the learning growth of Robert, who desired to read and write at a young age. This book, I created, includes different alphabetic letter sounds and recognition, reading and writing exercises. It is a great tool to help young students, who are struggling to read and write, learn at a fun and comfortable level.

Recommended by writing instructors and award-winning children's authors. Many of us think of children's picture books as being written mostly with simple declarative sentences. What an eye-opener to learn that they are actually filled with delightful figures of speech. I am not talking here about the common figures of speech we learn about in grade school: simile, onomatopoeia, alliteration, hyperbole and personification. I am talking about more subtle and sophisticated figures of speech which we may not even recognize as figures at all (until they are pointed out to us), but their use gives stories a charm and freshness that stands up to repeated readings. These figures have names which are eminently forgettable but the figures themselves make the stories in which they appear eminently memorable. In this volume, I point out many figures which appear in masterworks of children's picture storybooks, so that they may be appreciated and savored, and their patterns emulated in your own work.
It’s the Queen’s birthday, and the children must work together to create the most amazing machine – a machine that can create 100 apple crumbles by the afternoon tea party. With growing concerns around mental health, and in the wake of a period of uncertainty and change, it is more important than ever to pay attention to how young children express their emotions, and to teach them to articulate their thoughts in a healthy way. This beautifully illustrated picture book helps children understand the ‘journey’ in thinking, exploring the ways in which collaborating, experimenting and changing ideas can open new possibilities. By learning to reframe their memories, children learn that change and transition don’t have to be bad things. When it comes to child and adolescent mental health issues, prevention and early intervention are key. The ‘serve and return’ format of this book provides a virtual space where children can explore thoughts and feelings, teaching them to be resilient in the face of change.
